The famous Moraine lake is one of the most stunning natural wonders of Banff. It’s a must-see for any traveler visiting the Rockies. But getting there is a bit of an adventure!
After bumper-to-bumper traffic and parking chaos forced Parks Canada to close the road leading to the picturesque lake, visitors now need to either hike or use a shuttle or commercial bus.
1. It’s convenient.
Before 2023, visitors were able to drive their own cars up to Moraine Lake. Now that it’s closed off to private vehicles during peak season due to avalanche danger, the only way to access Moraine Lake is to book a tour or use Roam Transit.
The moraine lake bus offers a hassle-free way to get to the lake and avoids the stress of driving in such a sensitive environment. Additionally, the shuttle eliminates congestion and reduces emissions in the area.
The moraine lake bus is available from June to October. For the best experience, try to visit during the shoulder seasons of spring or autumn when the crowds are halved. If you want to see Moraine Lake at sunrise, book the earlier shuttle for 4 am or 5:05 am from Samson Mall.
2. It’s safe.
Moraine Lake has become so popular that parking is impossible for most visitors to access. With many people being turned away by parking lots that fill up quickly, Parks Canada has decided to limit private vehicles from driving up the road this year. Only Parks Canada shuttles, Roam transit buses and commercial vehicles displaying disabilities tags can go up the road.
Those hoping to see the sunrise at Moraine Lake will now be able to book a shuttle that departs from either Samson Mall in Lake Louise Village or the Lake Louise Gondola parking lot. This option will provide more options to get to the lake before sunrise, which can be difficult for some travellers.
Taking the bus to moraine lake will also help reduce harmful vehicle emissions in the sensitive area. This is good news for wildlife that inhabits the area as well.
3. It’s affordable.
While cycling to Moraine Lake is beautiful and super eco-friendly, it’s also a challenge. Unless you’re lucky enough to be there during the two weeks in early spring when Parks Canada plows or the snow naturally melts, bikers need to start their day very early to ensure they have time to complete hikes like Mount Temple before it gets too late to return down the mountain before the last shuttle leaves at 7:30pm!
Luckily, the public moraine lake shuttle is very affordable. Just $8 CAD for adults and $4 CAD for seniors or children, it’s cheaper than a guided tour! Plus, your ticket includes the return journey. You can book your shuttle online in advance or on the day of arrival at the Lake Louise Park & Ride.
4. It’s comfortable.
Moraine Lake bus is a comfortable and convenient way to visit the lake. The shuttles run frequently, and the trip takes about an hour. It’s a great option for travelers who want to save time and energy, but still see the lake on their own terms.
The only downside is that you have to book the Park and Ride shuttle in advance. Seats are released two days before departure at 8 am online. If you are able to be flexible with your dates and times, you will have a much better chance of booking seats on the Moraine Lake Park and Ride Shuttle.
Another option is to rent a car and drive yourself. Companies like Three Sister’s Taxi offer round-trip transport to both Lake Louise and Moraine Lake, with the option to spend an hour at each.
5. It’s fast.
Moraine Lake is one of the most famous places in Banff, but parking at the site can be difficult. Many visitors were turned away from visiting the area because the parking lots were full, creating stress in a sensitive environment. As a result, Parks Canada has now banned private vehicles from the 12.8 km scenic road year-round.
Instead, visitors can book a shuttle bus to visit the site. It’s a convenient option for visitors who want to avoid the hassle of finding parking or dealing with traffic.
Shuttles run daily from June to October, and tickets are available online. You can also book a guided tour that includes transportation to and from Moraine Lake. For those who prefer cycling, the Lakeshore Trail offers a beautiful 14 km ride to the lake.
